Our Closet Extravaganza - Pierce's New "Office"

Happy Tuesday!!! It feels so fun to be back!! We had the BEST break!!! We loved having Pierce home for a few extra days, I loved the afternoons with Jane with no tutoring or Discipleship Group, we soaked in the weather, and I even enjoyed a few naps when I normally would have written my blog 😉 It was a week for the books for sure. And we are so grateful that we got so much done upstairs as well!! I thought I'd share *Part 1* of our "Closet Extravaganza" that we embarked on earlier this year...
This all really started on our drive to my parents house last Thanksgiving. I was thinking about the new baby coming and what that would mean for Jane and our nursery and our rooms upstairs. It was also right around Christmas, when the house feels so cozy, but also you can tell when things are just slightly starting to cave in on you...especially when it comes to our closets. So I had an idea to switch some things around upstairs, and thus began this adventure.

We have three small closets in our room, one linen closet in the hallway and the two other bedrooms have a closet as well. You can take a look at Jane's closet here when we decided to install Elfa shelving before she was born. We have LOVED it, and I can't wait to put it in her new closet as well. But our closets needed a little rearranging, a whole lot of purging and some imagination to make them work with our growing family right now.

So I thought today I would share one of our "closet makeovers" so to speak in hopes that it might inspire you if you need to be creative with some space in your home as well. Pierce works from home one to two days a week, and that was one of the most complicated parts of changing our "guest room" into Jane's new room. There was a desk in there that Pierce always had to work, take meetings, be away from the action and have a space that was his own when he was at home. When we originally started, I wasn't sure exactly where he was going to work, but when I started cleaning out this "luggage/storage closet" as we called it, an idea dawned on me to make it a small office for Pierce. After some measuring and some creativity with making our desk that we already had fit, it is now one of our favorite spaces. Jane knows that it's "Daddy's office" and everyone laughs when I say Pierce works from a closet in our house, but it actually so accurate hahaha

So here's a little look at our new and improved storage closet turned office!
This is in the corner of our room...I'm sure most people don't even know this little door exists...
Because it used to look like this...just a whole lot of everything stuffed in there without even being able to walk in...
After some purging, we got to down to this, which was a little more manageable, but still not very practical for us...
So I mapped out some options, and we decided to hang some more shelving on the back wall...as you can see, we had a little helper in this whole process ☺️
We bought some of our new favorite baskets at Hobby Lobby....we have gone back so many times for these that Jane now associates "Hobby Lobby" with "more baskets" hahaha
I brainstormed one morning what could work behind the desk for Pierce's meetings and as always tried it out with some painters tape...haha At this point, Pierce was definitely starting to realize this was becoming more of an "office" than a closet...and a much bigger project than I think he realized hahaha
But I had a sweet little helper, and we have some new fun summer pool balls at our house as a result 😂
I have loved having this little one help me on this "design" project!!
She was definitely loving it just as much!
And loved trying out all of the "office" things that now live in this closet hahaha
But after a few touch ups to the wall, we had a functioning "office" space for Pierce! The baskets hold our collection of books, a few of Pierce's music speaker and drums, and up above, our shelves hold his Cajon, another drum, and my sewing machine.
We had to get creative with the storage space, but my goodness, how fun it is to see it functioning well when Pierce works from home!!
This little print is one that I gave to Pierce when he graduated college long before we were engaged or married. It had always been a favorite of his, and when I saw Gracelaced so beautifully watercolored it, I knew I had to snag it. The note on the back says I hope that it hangs in his room, studio, or office one day, and almost seven years later, it has now hung in all three!
We are thankful for this little space off of our room, and although it's unconventional, it has been such a fun project to work on, and one we're thankful we took the time and thought through what would make the most sense for our family.
It's our new favorite "closet" in our home! Thanks for following along and for all of your encouragement on this journey... After many more trips to Hobby Lobby, three porch donation pick-ups, some Marketplace selling, and lots of nap times spent organizing, our other upstairs closets are pretty much up to functioning speed as well, just not to the full-extent of this new office. I can't wait to share the others soon and hopefully Jane's room as well after some paint and fun design projects now that's empty and ready to go!

It's been a different start to the year on the house-project front for The Riddicks, but one that we're thankful for now being *almost* on the other side! I hope this inspires you as you tackle your own home projects as well!! Thanks for following along!!!

I'll plan to see you back here tomorrow!!
Here's to enjoying the little things and spaces, celebrating the big things, and soaking in all the moments in-between!!
Sending lots of love this Tuesday!

  2. I love this. Your creativity and ingenuity made a small closet in to a peaceful work retreat. The three (well four really) of you did an amazing job. I have a home office but would love to have a hideaway like this one. Great job!
